Weeks before Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington was found dead, his bandmate, Mike Shinoda, detailed Bennington’s emotional reaction to the suicide of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. Bennington and Cornell were close friends, so Linkin Park decided to perform “One More Light” in his honor. But Bennington kept getting choked up and had a hard time making it through the song, written about “the loss of a friend.”
The 41-year-old sang the ballad alongside Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson at the memorial service at the Hollywood Forever cemetery.The funeral was private but as it took place outside, waiting fans could hear Chester’s performance, with recordings of the poignant song surfacing online.
Bennington was godfather to one of Chris’s children, and he was hit hard by the star’s death back in May.Cornell died by suicide following a Soundgarden concert in Detroit.
A source told Radar Online: ‘Chester and Chris were so close, and he was never the same after Chris’s death.‘But everyone thought that he had it licked. He seemed to be at a good place in his life. It is just so tragic and there are no words.’
