The director of Episode 8: The Last Jedi has obviously done a very good job of impressing Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, as he’ll be back to put together his own three-chapter story in the years ahead.
But with the official statement declaring that it will be “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga”, what exactly do we have to look forward to?
Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh speculated: “This trilogy will have nothing to do with the Skywalker bloodline – Anakin, Luke, Kylo Ren – it will have nothing to do with any of the Skywalkers.
“It is an interesting direction for Disney and Lucasfilm to go, and choosing Rian Johnson, they must have faith in him.
“He must have done a really good job with The Last Jedi.”
He added: “Part of the lore of Star Wars will be involved – a piece of lore that has never been explored before, ever.
“So it will be a new and completely original idea embedded in the new trilogy.”
Whether this will involve any other existing characters remain to be seen, although Kennedy said in a recent interview that she was looking into new stories involving “Rey, Poe, Finn and BB-8”.
The Last Jedi will be out next month on a sea of hype, with JJ Abrams returning for Episode 9 in 2019.
In the meantime, the Han Solo standalone movie, Solo, is due out next May.
The new trilogy does not have a release date just yet.
