It remains the big mystery of the final (so far) trilogy. Who the Force is Rey and where did she come from? Is she a Solo, Skywalker, Jinn, Palpatine, Kenobi or virgin birth?
Is she even called Rey at all?
There are some huge clues that seem to prove that the girl from Jakku took that name to hide who she was. A major canon source also explains how she chose the name Rey.
Just imagine if the first words Luke says to her in Episode 8 actually reveal her true name…
WARNING MAJOR POTENTIAL SPOILERS
The build up to The Last Jedi has been a lesson in smoke and mirrors, with trailers and teasers seemingly filled with misdirection.
It seems that it all started long before, however, and the seeds were sown back in The Force Awakens.
Fans have long wondered over the big “secret” Rey mentions to BB8 and also noticed how she hesitated when Finn asks her her name, but it appears the answer was right there in front of our eyes, spelled out on screen.
Just not in letters most of us can read.
Remember that old scavenged rebel helmet she wore sitting outside her humble home on Jakku?
It has symbols on it which spell “Raeh.”
A Disney book, Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Rey’s Survival Guide, explains exactly who Raeh is and why a young abandoned girl might have taken her name.
There have been theories that she might simply have forgotten her own name, but she was clearly old enough in that flashback to be able to remember it if she wanted to.
Two competing theories suggest either she had her memories wiped by one of her parents in a bid to conceal and protect her identity, or that they told her to hide her real name.
The book is a form of journal and has hand-written entries from Rey.
A passage about the helmet says: “The name on it says Captain Dosmit Raeh of the Tierfon Aces. When I was a kid I liked to make up stories about Captain Raeh.”
It is simply too ludicrous a coincidence to believe that the young girl happened to find a helmet with a name on it that sounded the same as hers.
Surely, she took the name, imagining herself growing up like her hero?
This leads Mike Zeroh, like many others, to suggest that Rey might turn out to be Kira, after all. This is the name director JJ Abrams first called the character.
Other also point out that Raeh is a surname and Kira Rey would be a pleasingly logical echo of Kylo Ren…
