In tonight’s shocking instalment of the BBC soap, Max (played by Jake Wood) happened to be in the hospital room when Jane (Laurie Brett) gained consciousness, after offering to keep her company while Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) ran errands.
As the fog cleared and Jane slowly remembered everything that happened during Max’s devastating murder attempt, their conversation turned sinister.
Determined to ensure the recovering victim kept quiet about his involvement in the Beales’ restaurant fire – that also led to Steven Beale’s (Aaron Sidwell) death – Max threatened to finish the job if she didn’t keep his secret.
“I want you to get better Jane, I want you to go home to your family,” he warned ominously.
Mustering all of her courage, Jane replied: “You’re not that ruthless,” as Max continued: “Don’t test me Jane.”
But Jane was convinced she had the upper hand and told the attempted murderer: “If you were going to do it, you’d have done it by now.
“You can’t, can you?”
Following a tense stand off, Jane finally decided that the happiness of her family was more important and she appeared to concede to Max’s request to keep silent.
During a heartwarming reunion with her husband, Jane gave a pointed glance at Max in the background as she admitted: “My memory seems fine. Night of the fire’s a little bit patchy but I’m sure it’ll come back to me.”
Will Jane change her mind and expose Max for the criminal he is once and after all?
EastEnders continues tomorrow at 8pm on BBC One.
