Ian Beale (played by Adam Woodyatt) attempted to turn the tables on the soap villain as he arrived for a meeting with the Weyland boss.
As James (William Boyde) led him into a meeting room, Ian pressed record on his mobile ahead of their showdown.
While the businessman initially tried to convince the cafe owner that his mother (Gillian Taylforth) was lying about her sexual assault, he eventually confessed to the rape.
Ian was elated as he realised he finally had the evidence he needed to expose James and went to leave the building.
Unfortunately he was stopped by a security guard who took his phone and handed it to James.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Ian was forced to watch on as the audio file containing the villain’s confession was deleted.
Ian appeared devastated as he realised he had let Kathy down and feared he’d never be able to escape the Willmott-Brown family.
