The Strictly Come Dancing contestant has been at the top of the leaderboard week-on-week in the latest series of the BBC show, and now the star has revealed that she nearly didn’t work with the former magician.
Speaking to Bradley Walsh on the ITV quiz series about how she met Paul, Debbie McGee, 59, admitted: “I auditioned for a director and choreographer who put me in the Paul Daniels Show for the summer season.
“I didn’t know who Paul was and I went home and my mum and dad and everybody said, ‘Oh he’s a magician’ and I went, ‘Oh, hate magic’.”
Laughing, the former assistant continued: “Luckily, I liked his magic.”
A favourite to win the BBC’s veteran reality show, the television personality also had fun teasing The Chase’s quiz host Bradley Walsh, 57.
As the pair chatted easily, Debbie suddenly left the comedian red-faced with a cheeky innuendo.
Bradley asked innocently if the player was ready to start her cash builder round, but Debbie cocked her head and said: “Depends what you’re asking that I’m ready for.”
Stunned, the soon-to-be Doctor Who actor seemed unable to think of his usually quick-witted response, and merely stared at the camera instead.
Sidestepping the awkward conversation, Bradley finally said: “I’m thrilled you’ve come on Deb,” before firing out her questions.
Despite Debbie displaying an impressive performance on the gameshow, the collective group failed to beat chaser Jenny Ryan, also known as The Vixen, in the final chase.
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.45pm on BBC One.
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
